The Day Your Name Became You

Before your name meant you, it meant absolutely nothing. Before you understood language, your name was just another sound in the room. A door closing. A dog barking. A spoon hitting the floor. Your mother saying a particular collection of syllables over and over again. You had no idea that sound represented you. Then people kept saying it. They said it when they wanted your attention. They said it while looking at you. They said it while picking you up, comforting you, praising you, correcting you. Again and again and again, until eventually your brain made the connection: that sound means me.

What If You're Not Afraid of Death?
