The Dark Side of Man

We spend a strange amount of our lives trying to become less dangerous. From childhood, we're taught which emotions are acceptable and which ones need to be controlled. Be patient. Be polite. Don't get angry. Don't fight. Don't lose your temper. And obviously, there's wisdom in that. A person who explodes every time they're challenged isn't powerful. They're controlled by their impulses. But somewhere along the way, we started confusing self-control with the absence of anything that needs controlling. And those aren't the same thing.
